Doreen Wright Shope

July 1, 1943 — December 12, 2025

Hughesville

Doreen Wright Shope, 82, of Hughesville, entered into rest Friday, December 12, 2025, at UPMC, Williamsport.

A graduate of Greenwood Joint High School, class of 1961, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1965 and a Master of Education degree in 1969 from what was then Bloomsburg State College and is now Bloomsburg University.

Doreen spent the first 16 years of her career teaching Secondary Business Education in the Juniata County, South Middleton, and Montgomery Area School Districts. That was followed by more than 20 years at the Williamsport Area Community College/Pennsylvania College of Technology as a member of the Business Administration faculty. A dedicated professional, she was recognized over the years for both service and teaching within the School of Business and Computer Technology. In 1991, she was honored by the College with a Distinguished Teaching Award. She retired as an Associate Professor in 2005.

In addition to professional memberships, she previously served on the Boards of the Lycoming County SPCA, the Williamsport Chamber Choir and Orchestra, and the Montgomery Area School Districts Red Raider Foundation. She was also past-president of the Hughesville Business and Professional Women’s Club.

Doreen was preceded in death by her parents, John Harrison and Kathryn Cox Wright; her ex-husband, Alfred L. Shope; her sisters, Laurel Dysinger and Kathryn Colleen Shelley; and a niece, Heidi Shelley.

She is survived by nieces and nephews (including great and great-greats); a scattering of cousins; truly special friends; and her adored furry adoptees.

When asked how Doreen acquired all her cats over the years, a friend of hers explained “they came to her house in their little fur jammies and notes pinned to them saying: please take me in.”

A private graveside service will be held at Wright’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Millerstown, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers or donations, Doreen would be pleased if you would honor her memory by simply doing something to make someone else’s day a little brighter.
