Ruth Elizabeth (Herman) Miller, 99, long-time resident of Muncy, went to be with the Lord on September 16, 2026, following a short illness. Ruth was born in the village of Penns Creek on August 12, 1927, the daughter of Luther Alfred Herman and Bertha Mary (Bowersox) Herman. She was raised in Penns Creek, attended a one room schoolhouse and excelled as a student, even skipping the second grade as a result of her advanced academic achievement. Her love of learning, which began at a young age, would continue throughout her life.

Ruth was an amazing storyteller and historian with family tales spanning generations, including experiences from the Great Depression and World War II. As a member of the Greatest Generation, she proudly served her country and the war effort as an employee at the Chef Boyardee Plant in Milton where her team canned military rations and field meals for the fighting soldiers on the front lines. Following the war, in 1946, Ruth married the love of her life, World War II veteran Kenneth Harold Miller of Mount Pleasant Mills. Their love affair and committed marriage would span the next five decades until Kenneth’s death in 1995.

Ruth spent her life selflessly caring for and loving others who crossed her path, but she did so professionally for many years as well, as a dedicated nurse and shift supervisor at Lysock and Sycamore Manor Senior Care Facilities. Ruth was full of life, enjoyed attending the theater, concert productions and family sporting events, liked traveling and devoured books, reading was one of her cherished passions. But what she loved more than anything else was spending time with family and friends. Her quick wit and humor always made those around her feel welcome, but Ruth’s incredible talent as a cook and baker were the highlight of every holiday and family gathering.

Ruth was a devoted, proud and loving mother to four children and their spouses: daughter Judy Althouse and husband Bruce Sr. (deceased) of Myerstown and sons Darrel Miller and wife Debby of Indianapolis, IN, Galen Miller and wife Stacy of Shickshinny and Mark Miller and wife Tamra of Raleigh, NC.

She was also a beloved Grammy to thirteen grandchildren: Ruthanne Gray, Bruce Althouse Jr., Michael Althouse, Kristoffer Miller, Mandy Crockenberg, Kenneth Miller, Matthew Miller, Andrea Hinz, Justis Miller, Shiloh Miller, Dustin Miller, Nathan Miller and Luke Miller.

And a treasured great grandmother (GG) to eighteen great grandchildren: Mitchell, Molly, Micah, Sydney, Zoe, Adeline, Lorelei, Sailor, Hazel, Sullivan, Josephine, Johanna, Lincoln, Sarah, Elisha, Jones, Miles and Callan.

Ruth is also survived by 6 nieces and 7 nephews in whose lives she remains an esteemed mother figure. She was preceded in death by all her siblings, by her sisters Dorothy, Fay and Anna and brothers Henry, Luther, Richard and David.

A viewing will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service beginning at 10:30 a.m. at George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mt. Pleasant Mills, PA 17853, with her two grandsons, Rev. Bruce Althouse and Rev. Dustin Miller, officiating.

In Lieu of flowers, the immediate family is asking that any and all contributions be directed to the Gatehouse Inpatient Hospice Care Home, 1100 Grampion Boulevard, Williamsport, PA 17710-1946, whose kind, compassionate, devoted and personalized care made our mother’s final days ones of peace and comfort.
