Wayne R. "Coach" Shuler

Wayne “Coach” Shuler, 88, of Liverpool passed away peacefully Saturday August 1, 2026, at home.

He was born September 1, 1937, a son of the late Miles and Olive Shuler. He spent his childhood in Liverpool, when you could still play ball and other games on the streets unsupervised. Then it was off to the beautiful Susquehanna River to spend time fishing and swimming with friends.

He attended Liverpool Elementary, then Greenwood High School in Millerstown. There he excelled in basketball, being named “All League” as a Sophomore, but his favorite sport was baseball. He was a great Yankees fan.

After graduating in 1955 from Greenwood, he then attended West Chester College, where he received his degree in Health, Phys. Ed. and Driver Training, graduating in 1959.

In 1959, a new school, Southwestern, opened outside of Hanover, PA; they hired him that year as a teacher, along with other new graduates. He taught there until 1966, then was offered a position at his former Greenwood School District. The kids were told they could call him Mr. Shuler or “Coach”. Most chose to call him Coach. He retired from there in May of 1993, and remained interested in the students and attended Greenwood athletic events.

Most days of summer vacation were spent bass fishing. He was an expert at filleting a bass. After retiring, he took up golf and joined the Lost Creek Golf Club at McAlisterville, where he experienced several holes-in-one. He made a lot of new friends there. He also enjoyed hunting and trapping in the fall.

Wayne was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church of Liverpool. He was a member of all the Retired Teacher Associations and the Susquehanna Sportsmens Club. He was the last President of the Liverpool Senior Center.

Wayne was a 59 year member of the Liverpool Lions Club, where he had served as a longtime Treasurer and volunteer. His song leading of “God Bless America” will be missed.

In 2007, Wayne and Ruth were the recipients of the Perry Valley Grange Community Service Award, given annually to local residents who excel in community service.

His pastimes included playing poker, solving very challenging Sudoku, and watching Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, and sports.

He coached Greenwood Baseball, Liverpool Little League, teeners, and also taught swimming lessons. Wayne was the ice cream maker for many events, and also managed card parties for the Liverpool Area Recreation Association.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, the former Ruth Rinard, son Scott Shuler of Mifflintown, daughter Michelle Shuler of Liverpool, and grandchild Rocky Shuler, to which he was known as “Pop Pop”. He lost his older son, Jeffrey Shuler, to cancer on March 3, 2025. He was proceeded in passing by his sisters Leatrice “Sis” Hoffman and Elaine Simmons.

On Sunday, August 30, 2026, a visitation will be held from 12:00 to 3:00, followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:00 at the Liverpool United Methodist Church, 109 S. Market St., Liverpool. A fellowship gathering with luncheon will immediately follow downstairs. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wayne’s memory may be sent to his church or the Liverpool Lions Club.
